Industrial statisticians, but perhaps more importantly, their engineering
clients or contacts should be interested in the following lecture, which I
am posting here on behalf of Tim Davis, of the Ford Motor Company:
Richard Parry-Jones, F.Eng., Group Vice-President of Product Development
and
Quality, Ford Motor Company, is giving the 1999 Engineering Manufacturing
lecture to the Royal Academy of Engineering, London, on May 10. The lecture
is
entitled
"Engineering for Corporate Success in the New Millenium"
and will be delivered at the premises of the Royal Society, 6 Carlton House
Terrace, SW1, at 6pm.
Parry-Jones, one of the very few senior executives of a global
manufacturing
company responsible for both engineering AND quality, will be talking about
the challenges of engineering in the automobile industry as it enters the
21st
century. A major theme of the speech is recognition of the need for
engineers
to understand the effects of variability on engineering designs and
manufacturing processes, and to be proficient in the skills required to
manage
strategies to deal with this variation. Fundamentally, this requires a
synergistic combination of engineering science with statistical science, so
that cost efficient, error free designs can be developed. Parry-Jones will
illustrate his talk with examples of current practice within the Ford Motor
Company, and call on the British engineering profession, particularly
academics and others who have a hand in developing the engineers of
tomorrow,
to embed statistical science into undergraduate engineering courses and so
create a generation of statistically minded engineers.
Attendance at the lecture is by prior arrangement, by e-mail to Ms. Amy

Tim writes:
'Please circulate this information to other members of your institutions
who
might be interested. I would be particularly grateful if my statistical
colleagues could inform any engineering contacts that they may have.
It would also be particularly appropriate for statisticians to attend, so
that, for example, the Royal Statistical Society's "outreach" initiatives
can take note of the points made by Mr. Parry-Jones.
Please feel free to call or e-mail me for further information.
Sincerely,
Tim Davis http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/tpd/
