I am circulating the following adverts for two biostatistics positions at
the TVW Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, Perth, Western
Australia. These posts have become vacant because I am returning to the
UK, and Katrina Tiller (the current junior statistician at the Institute)
is moving on to a full time PhD. Working at the Institute is no holiday,
but these posts will be hard to beat for research interest, a stimulating
work environment and career advancement potential.


The junior position will be vacated in June 1999. The senior position is
available from late August 1999. There is scope for flexibility in all
aspects of the job descriptions if the right candidates come along.

Senior Biostatistician

######################

   The TVW Telethon Institute for Child Health Research is an
internationally recognised centre for research into childhood disease. We
are seeking a senior biostatistician to work in the Division of
Epidemiology. The appointee will work closely with senior members of the
Divisions of Epidemiology and Psychosocial Research in designing,
managing, analysing and interpreting a series of research projects funded
by the NH&MRC (National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia)
under Australia's only Program Grant for Epidemiology. The appointee is
also likely to become involved in collaborative work with the clinical
and laboratory Divisions and will help to shape the Institute's strategic
plan for biostatistics. He/she will supervise a junior biostatistician
(see below) who will work mainly on the Program Grant.


The applicant should have a sound post-graduate qualification in
statistics or bio/medical statistics and have suitable practical
experience. He/she should have well developed communication and
management skills. He/she will be encouraged to develop a theoretical or
applied research program of his/her own, to seek relevant grant funding
and to publish as widely as possible. However, his/her primary
responsibility will be to ensure the on-going statistical 'well-being' of
projects in the Program Grant.


Perth is a beautiful city in the south west of Western Australia. The
environment is very pleasant and the weather considered by many to be
near perfect (hot dry summers with afternoon sea breezes and temperate
winters with variable rainfall).  The Institute is soon to move to a
purpose built facility lying beside the State's main paediatric teaching
hospital which is sited in Subiaco to the West of Perth. We have a
'mixed' platform computer network running PCs (Windows NT and 95), Macs
and Unix. The Division of Epidemiology uses mainly PCs and Unix. We run
SAS, Splus and BUGS on both platforms, and SPSS, Stata, MLn, Minitab and
Egret on the PCs. The Division of Epidemiology has research interests
which include the aetiology and consequences of intrauterine growth
restriction, premature birth, birth defects, cerebral palsy, newborn
encephalopathy, and infertility. There is a significant methodological
component to the Program Grant with a focus on the modelling of causal
pathways and genetic epidemiology. There is an Institute-wide (including
epidemiological) focus on common complex diseases such as asthma, and an
emphasis on collaborative research involving laboratory, clinical and
population scientists. It is an exciting environment within which to work
and the Institute has an excellent track record in obtaining competitive
and commercial grants and in publication. The post could be very
attractive either as a long-term career position or as a medium term
(e.g. 3-5 years) step in the development of a research-based or academic
career. The position has become available because the current post holder
(since 1992) has been appointed to a Chair in Genetic Epidemiology.


Initial salary will fall in the range Aus$40,000-Aus$55,000 depending
upon experience and qualifications. The post will fall vacant in August
1999 and currently has funding to 31 December 2000. However, we are
hopeful that our recent application to the NH&MRC for renewal of our
Program Grant will be successful and funding will then be extended for a
further four years.

Junior Biostatistician

   The TVW Telethon Institute for Child Health Research is an

biostatistician (see above). He/she will work closely with other members
of the Divisions of Epidemiology and Psychosocial Research in designing,
analysing and interpreting a series of research projects funded by the
NH&MRC (National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia) under
Australia's only Program Grant for Epidemiology. The appointee is also
likely to become involved in a limited amount of collaborative work and
statistical consulting emanating from some of the other clinical and
laboratory divisions in the Institute. The range of statistical problems
arising from the group will ensure that the successful applicant gains
extensive experience across a wide range of methods including generalized
linear modelling (particularly logistic and Poisson regression), survival
analysis, and correlated data analysis using generalized estimating
equations and multilevel modelling. It is also likely that substantial
experience will be gained in the use of Gibbs sampling. 


The applicant should have a sound qualification in statistics,
biostatistics or a closely related field. He/she should have good
communication skills and appropriate practical experience would be
valuable.
