PhD Studentship / Research Assistantship
A PhD Studentship / Research Assistantship is available at the MRC
Environmental Epidemiology Unit at the University of Southampton (Director:
Professor DJP Barker FRS). The successful candidate will work on
statistical and epidemiological studies under the supervision of Dr Clive
Osmond, one of seven statisticians at the Unit. The Unit has an
international reputation for studies assessing the long-term effects of
nutrition and growth in fetal and early postnatal life on adult health.
The PhD study will be based on a cohort in Helsinki. Data available for
members of the cohort include measurements made at birth in 1924-39,
longitudinal growth measurements from infant welfare and school records and
socio-economic data, all of which may be linked to later records of
hospitalisation, use of medicine and death. The cohort will also be the
base for clinical studies of survivors.
The appointee will register for a PhD with the University of Southampton.
Candidates must have recently graduated with a first or upper second class
honours degree in a subject with a strong statistical content, or have a
relevant masters degree.
