            3 Posts in Statistical Ecology
_______________________________________________________

As part of a major initiative to set up a new centre,
we are seeking to appoint three new staff.

Post 1: Research Fellow 1A / Research Fellow 2 -
                                     Ref: KC041/AMC1/99

A post for an applied statistician, initially for at
least 1.5 years, exists in the Research Unit for
Wildlife Population Assessment (RUWPA; see
http://www.ruwpa.st-and.ac.uk). You will spend up to
half your time working on projects within the Sea Mammal
Research Unit (SMRU; see http://smub.st-and.ac.uk/).
Depending on experience and expertise, you will also
work on projects in one or more of the following areas:
development of sightings survey methodology; spatial
and spatio-temporal modelling of species abundance;
generalized additive models (GAMs); state-space
modelling; assessment of cetacean abundance; surveys
of red, roe and sika deer in Scotland; fisheries stock
assessments.

You should have a good honours degree in statistics, or
a good honours degree in biology or mathematics with a
strong statistical background, and several years'
experience as an applied statistician. A PhD in a
relevant topic would be a strong advantage, as would
extensive experience with any of the following:  GAMs;
MCMC methods; state-space models; wildlife assessment
methods; S-Plus. You should be able to communicate
well and enthusiastically with biologists, and should
have consultancy experience.

Post 2: Research Fellow 1A - Ref: KC042/AMC1/99

A post, initially for one year, is available in RUWPA,
also closely linked with SMRU. You will develop a
simulation model of harbour porpoise dynamics in the
North Sea and adjacent waters. Following a general
methodology devised by the International Whaling
Commission, the simulation model will evaluate the
consequences of management actions by explicitly
addressing the key area of uncertainty concerning
porpoise population structure and dynamics, based on
the limited available information.

You should have a PhD and experience in mathematical
modelling of biological populations, or other relevant
experience. You will be hard-working, self-motivated
and innovative. Ideally, you would have had exposure to
modelling work conducted by the International Whaling
Commission.

Post 3: Research Fellow 1A - Ref: KC154/AMC1/99

This position is available on combining population
dynamic modelling and statistical modelling for
ecological impact assessment. The idea is to integrate
population dynamic models within a statistical modelling
framework, in order to improve ecological predictions for
impact assessment. The work will build on existing
methodology developed at St. Andrews for fitting and
inference using population dynamic models, the structure
of which may include non-parametric smooth terms. The
project provides much scope for innovative work in
population dynamics and methodological statistics. The
post is funded by Zeneca Agrochemicals (as part of its
strategic research program) and will involve collaboration
with Dr Tim Kedwards and colleagues in Zeneca's ecological
risk assessment section based at Jealott's Hill in
Berkshire. You will work at St Andrews with Dr Simon
Wood at the Mathematical Institute. You should have a PhD
or expect to obtain one shortly, although candidates
without a PhD may be considered if they have suitable
experience. The position is available for 2 years in the
first instance.

Informal inquiries should be directed to Steve Buckland:

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the RA1A scale
for research staff ie 16,286 - 24,479 pounds per annum or in
the case of post 1, for an exceptional candidate, Scale 2
ie 22,579- 30,065 pounds per annum. (1 UK pound = US$1.62.)

Closing Date for Posts 1 and 2: 7 October 1999
Closing Date for Post 3: 27 September 1999

Application forms and further particulars from Personnel
Services, University of St Andrews, College Gate, North
Street, St Andrews, Fife KY16 9AJ (tel: +44-(0)1334-462571,
fax +44-(0)1334-462570 or e-mail [log in to unmask]).
We regret applications cannot be made by e-mail.
