12.00 David Sayers (NAG Ltd)
Building Statistical Add-ins to Excel
The process of adding the statistical functionality available in a large
Fortran Library to Excel will be described. The problems in providing the
most suitable form of user-interface and help systems will be discussed
and the resulting system demonstrated.
2.00pm Jim Shalliker (University of Plymouth)
Using Excel to simulate queueing systems
Two case studies using Excel to simulate queueing systems will be described.
The first is a simulation of a health centre appointment and consultation
system. It will be explained why, surprisingly, Excel turned out to be a
marginally better simulation tool for this job than a specialist simulation
package
The second is a simulation of the reorganisation of regionally dispersed
multi-operator customer dial-in services to provide a national
single-number service. The generation of the data as well as the
some possible learning opportunities will be discussed.
3.30 Francois Sermier (Independent Consultant, Paris)
Exploratory Data Analysis using Excel.
The talk will start by briefly presenting different ways to do statistics in
Excel (Analysis tools, Add-ins, VBA programming) and then
show how to use plain calculations in spreadsheets to explore an
Excel data file. There will be no add-ins or special macro tools, but a
combination of functions, graphics and dialog controls to build Excel
tools for interactive scatter plots, conditional distributions, histograms
and graphical inclusion/exclusion of points in a regression.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be a 10 pound fee to include the
buffet lunch, coffee and tea. If you wish to attend please
send a cheque for 10 pounds, payable to the Royal
Statistical Society, to:
