Amgen Post-Doc in Pharmaceutical Statistics

The Candidate
This post is suitable for an applied statistician qualified to PhD level
with an interest in applying decision analysis to practical problems
concerning the choice of candidate projects for drug development in the
pharmaceutical industry. The main abilities sought are a good all-round
knowledge in statistics, an interest in applying statistics to practical
matters, an enthusiasm to collaborate with scientists from other
disciplines, the capability to carry out self-directed work and an
ability to communicate the results of statistical research. Some familiarity
with Bayesian decision-analytic approaches will be an advantage as will a
proven interest in medical, economic or financial statistics.
Funding
This post is funded jointly by Amgen, Cambridge (75%) and the Department
of Statistical Science, University College London (25%).
Responsibilities
The post-doctoral research assistant will work on developing and
implementing practical methods for assisting managers within the
pharmaceutical industry as regards the task of choosing candidate drugs
for development and managing the development portfolio. Specific topics
covered might include
Developing indices for ranking projects
Capturing option value
Forecasting profitability
Assessing probabilities of success
Approaches to balancing portfolios
Comparing traded portfolio and decision analytic approaches
Managing variability
Practical implementation of quantitative approaches to portfolio
management
Location
The post will be located in the Department of Statistical Science,
University College London, London WC1E 6BT. It will also involve
attendance at Amgen's offices in Cambridge from time to time and may
involve occasional travel to other Amgen sites.
Duration
The appointment will be for one year in the first instance with a
possible extension to two further years.
