New MSc course in Quantitative Genetics and Genome Analysis
=================================================
>From October 1st, 1999, the University of Edinburgh will be offering
an exciting new MSc course in Quantitative Genetics and Genome
Analysis. The one-year course is designed to provide students with the
required knowledge to apply quantitative genetics theory to practical
problems in the biomedical and agricultural industries, and to
undertake research on problems related to quantitative genetics,
population and evolutionary genetics, and genome analysis.
The course will be run within the Division of Biological Sciences in
the Faculty of Science and Engineering, with a substantial input of
teaching and research facilities provided by SAC, the Roslin Institute
and the MRC Human Genetics Unit. In the Edinburgh area within the
University and its Associated Institutions there are groups of
international standing with expertise over a broad range of
applications of quantitative genetics. All the groups involved in
facilitating research and teaching on this course have an excellent
research rating.
Teaching will be provided through lectures, tutorials, seminars, and
computer and lab practicals. A strong research element will be an
integral part of the course. Students will be required to do a
mini-project associated with any of the participating research groups
in each Term, and will be working on a maxi research project during
the summer months.
The year is organised in three Terms, followed by a 3-month summer
period. Term 1 is dedicated to the Genetics of Populations, followed
by Quantitative Trait Analysis and Genomics in Term 2. In Term 3,
there will be a choice of three modules: Human Genetics, Principles of
Genetic Improvement, and In Depth Literature Review. The remaining 4
months of the course will be dedicated to a research project.
Topics which will be covered in the lectures, tutorials and practicals
include: Population Genetics theory, Human Population Genetics,
Quantitative Genetics, Statistics applied to genetics, Quantitative
Genetics Analysis, Genetic marker technology, Measuring Genetic
Diversity, Complex Segregation Analysis, Linkage Analysis, QTL Mapping
in Experimental Populations, and Mapping Simple and Complex Disease
Genes in human populations.
Qualifications for admission: Candidates must normally hold an Honours
degree or its equivalent in Genetics, Biology, Medicine, Veterinary
Medicine, Forestry, Agriculture, Aqua-Culture, Mathematics or
Statistics.
