Statistics in Industry Meeting
Date: Wednesday February 10th 1999, time 2pm (until 3-3:30pm)
Venue: University of Liverpool, room 6.04 (Maths and Oceanography Building)
The meeting will give an introduction to possible careers for a statistician in
an industrial setting. It is primarily targeted at undergraduate mathematicians
and statisticians, though all are welcome to attend. Directions/extra details on

Two speakers:
Speaker: Damien McElvenny (HSE)
Title: Medical Statistics and Epidemiology in HSE
Synopsis: An outline the current procedures for recruitment of
statisticians into the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will be
provided. This will be supplemented by an overview the work of HSE's
Epidemiology and Medical Statistics Unit (EMSU), which will be
illustrated by some recent examples of completed work.
Speaker: Elaine Gurney (Yorkshire Clinical Trials Unit)
Title: Medical Statisticians at Work
Synopsis: This presentation will give an overview about the potential career
paths for a Medical Statistician interested in clinical trials. It should offer
a brief insight into a typical day in the life of a statistician within a
Clinical Trials Unit, pharmaceutical company and a contract research
organisation. It should enable you to decide whether life as a medical
statistician is for you!
