INTRODUCTION TO SURVIVAL ANALYSIS
18-20 October 1999
This course is aimed at scientists and statisticians engaged in medical
research in public sector institutions and in the pharmaceutical and
related industries, who have little or no experience of dealing with
survival data.
Survival data arise in a literal form from clinical trials concerning
life-threatening conditions, but the methodology can also be applied to
other waiting times such as the duration of pain relief.
In the course we discuss the design of a clinical trial where the response
is a survival time, and the analysis of the resulting data. Course content
includes life tables and Kaplan-Meier estimates, the log-rank and Wilcoxon
tests, the Cox proportional hazards model and the Weibull parametric model.
Some model checking procedures are also considered.
During lectures the statistical package SAS will be used to illustrate the
methodologies, and in practical sessions participants will design, analyse
and report on the results of a simulated clinical trial.
Most of the topics in this course are covered in the book "Modelling
Survival Data in Medical Research" by Dave Collett, published by Chapman &
Hall, and a copy will be given to each participant.
