At Aston University, students with long-term illness who are
sufficiently fit at the time take examinations either in the main
venue, or in a "special needs" room (with others) if extra time has
been allocated - the aim is to maintain as normal a situation as
possible. The chief invigilator would be made aware of the situation
if appropriate.
Where this is not feasible - if an amanuensis or PC is required, or if
the student needs recommended "time-out", they are invigilated in a
separate room.
Emergencies (including infectious diseases) are dealt with by the most
appropriate of the above methods.
In all cases, medical evidence is required, and the Examinations
Office makes the arrangements at the request of the Head of School.
Medical staff are made aware of examination dates, and are on call for
emergencies to all students.
Invigilation under close medical supervision can be arranged - two
years ago we had a student take finals in a Hospice, suitably
invigilated by Aston staff.
