I'm responding to your recent e-mail on behalf of the Federal University of
Wales Registry. I hope the topic is of general interest.
The answers given are based on the University of Wales regulations and
Standing Orders, so our Institutions could give you a more detailed picture
of what happens day-to-day.

Subject: examiner training

QUESTIONS
1. Does your institution have a formal scheme for training MPhil/PhD
examiners?
NO (although individual Insts may do so)
2. Does your institution, whether or not as part of a formal scheme for
training MPhil/PhD examiners, permit colleagues to attend MPhil/PhD viva
examinations as observers?
>>We do not specifically include a provision for this, although there may be
additional (non-voting) appointments made by the Board for colleagues "in an
advisory capacity".
Does your institution provide written good practice guidelines to the
examiners of MPhil/PhD examinations, in addition to the regulations for the
conduct of the examination?
YES (I'll send a copy in the post today)
