John
We at Cranfield University have had students obtaining discretionary awards
from LEAs for nine-month Postgraduate Diploma programmes, but NOT MScs. I
don't know if the policy has changed recently, as we've not had much
interest in PG Dips for a couple of years. We've also had Scottish
students obtaining SAAS funding for Masters courses other than IT (provided
the Agency perceives the programme as 'vocational').

Subject: Funding for Taught Masters
Funding for Taught Masters Courses
I have been contacted by a major research and teaching institute, which
offers taught postgraduate
courses in collaboration with several Scottish universities.
Scottish-domiciled students who undertake postgraduate IT courses may
qualify for fee and maintenance support from the Scottish Awards Agency
for Scotland under the Agency's PSAS scheme. The enquiry is whether UK
students from outwith Scotland may be eligible for similar support from
LEAs if they wish to undertake a taught Masters course? The institute
has come across cases of students from outwith Scotland who wish to take
an MSc, but are unable to attract support. (Another potential source of
support for such students - EPSRC - apparently has an embargo at present
on support for new taught masters courses)
Any advice on LEA policy in this area would be gratefully received, and
I'd be happy to pass responses to interested colleagues. My email
