I understood the arrangements were as below (see also SSIN 06/98) but
page 30 of DfEE booklet 'Financial Support for Students in 1999/2000'
(students starting before Sept 98) states that anyone aged 50 or over at
the start of their PGCE is not entitled to a student loan, even if it
immediately follows their first degree course during which they they
were eligible for loans. Presumably this is correct?

Yes, those who enrol end-on will continue to receive fees, loans and
grants under the old (but updated) Awards and Student Loans
Regulations. Those starting PGCE courses after a gap will come under
the new Student Support Regulations
See SSIN 6/98

Roger: - can you confirm or otherwise that "existing" students who enrol
end-on to a PGCE course (i.e.those we referred to last year as
"continuing PGCE" will retain their eligibility for
part-grant/part-loan support as per last year. I am assuming that they
will get the "main grant and loan rates for existing students" in Table
2 of SSIN 07/99.
Many thanks,
Janusz
