Apologies for the delay in responding, and for duplication if you're
already had replies!
I understand that Middlesex has such regulations, and have been advised
that you should approach

I hope this is helpful - did you have any luck elsewhere?

Subject: Practice Based Doctorates
Apologies for cross-posting.
I have been asked to draw up regulations to cover practice based
doctoral awards in particular in musical performance and plastic arts
and design. I have to hand the UK Council for Graduate Education
publication on "Practice-based Doctorates in the Creative and
Performing Arts and Design" and also the results of a survey carried
out last year by the University of Brighton "National Profile of
Research Degree Awards: Innovation, Clarity and Coherence". Both are
very useful but the former tends to dwell on the award of PhD (which
many feel is only appropriate for traditional research + thesis type
presentations) while the latter is not specific enough for my needs.
In particular I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has the
following in their institution:
1) PhD's in creative or performing arts and design (exclude
Musical Composition - of which there are many examples). Could you
please give examples of the subjects permitted and the methods of
submission. Copies of regulations would be very useful.
2) Other doctoral awards used for the creative or performing arts
and design. I would like to know what is the designation of the award
(e.g. DMusA; DMA; DPhil etc); what subjects are covered in each and
if possible a copy of your regulations.
3) Anyone who has tackled / is tackling the same problem and who
may like to share thoughts.
Please reply direct to me. I will willingly publish a summary of the
replies.
Many thanks
