There was some limited discussion on the list a
year or so ago about practices with regard to the
award of Merits (and Distinctions) in the case of taught MA
and MSc courses. At the risk of troubling colleagues on
the matter again, it would be very helpful for me to gain
some impression as to
(i) whether there are many (or any) institutions that do
not even make provision for the award of a Distinction
(ii) whether it is common for institutions who do allow for
the possibility of Distinctions also to allow for the
award of an intervening category of Merit.
May I suggest replies off list, subject to an
undertaking that I will post a summary of the responses,
in case this is a live issue anywhere else.
