University
Sheffield launched the SHUcard in October 1997 - they are
now working closely with Sheffield City Council and other
commercial partners to launch 1st CARD which will be used
by both students and Sheffield residents.
Richard Bunce, Deputy Head of Management Services,
University of Hertfordshire
Hertfordshire is the first university in the UK to pioneer the
use of a hybrid smart card with both contactless and contact
chips. The card is used for in-house electronic purse, access
control and ticketing applications.
Laurie Burbridge, Director of IT Services, University of Exeter
Exeter has used the Mondex electronic purse chip card since
1996. The University is committed to maximising the use of the
chip. They have several chip based applications and are now
actively developing MULTOS applications.
The Government View
A spokesperson from either the DfEE or the CITU will outline
HM Government’s view on the potential for smart card use in
Higher Education.
