Thanks to all those who took part in the survey. The replies have been very
useful, but if anyone would like to send follow-up information I will be glad to
receive it.
Here are the results - I have also included information known about a few other
HEIs.
* Do you produce a Unit Catalogue which gives advance times of units/modules?
YES 6 (32%); NO 13 (68%)
The NO vote includes 4 places where individual departments produce a catalogue,
and 2 where the catalogue is on the Web, but without times of events.
Several places noted the problem of confusion caused by the provision of
information which later has to be altered in the light of changed circumstances.
* In which month is the catalogue issued?
Dec 2; March 1; April 2; not known 1
NB This question applied only to catalogues which gave advance timing of
modules/units. One further HEI put details of units on the Web site, but without
timings.
* In which month do continuing students receive realistic timetables for Sept?
March 1; June 2; July 2; August 2; Sept 7
* In which month do Level One students receive realistic timetables for Sept?
March 1; June 2; August 1; Sept 10
The bias towards Sept is understandable, but it is interesting that there are a
significant number who are in a position to issue timetables to continuing
students along with their exam results.
* Finally, I pieced together some statistics on when an indicative draft
timetable is known. The results are:
Dec 2; March 1; April 2; June 2; July 2; roll-over 2
Could be useful in answering all those telephone queries that we get from Spring
onwards.
OVERALL - The results are probably as might be expected, although 3 HEIs
(including ourselves) are exploring the possibility of advancing the planning
process by a few months in order to improve the service to students.
