If you have the course and term data assembled in an Excel spreadsheet, it
should not be difficult to tailor it (eg by re-arranging columns) in order
to drop it into the SLC software. For what it is worth I have taken a
similar approach, but instead of entering dates against individual courses,
I have identified about 20 different term date patterns, and allocated a
code to each pattern. The code appears in the spreadsheet against each
course/year, and a second spreadsheet provides the lookup table for codes
against actual 1999-2000 dates. I will them use MS Access to link the two
spreadsheets as though they were Access tables, and create a query and a
report with whatever items SLC want, to output the data back to Excel before
dropping it into the SLC software. This has the advantage that in future
years we will only have to change the dates against each pattern in the
small spreadsheet, rather than re-key them against every course/year. I
mentioned this approach to the SLC people at the last meeting of the DfEE
Design Group, and they could see no problem; I was given the clear
impression that it would be possible to drop data already collected in a
spreadsheet into their software. Please let me know whether the SLC
response to you is any different.

Subject: RE: SLC Term date notification
Based on the specification and deadline contained in the letter dated 30
November 1998 from Jacqueline Fernie of the Student Loans Company we have
compiled an Excel spreadsheet of our course years and their term dates. This
spreadsheet extends to over 800 rows.
I do not think it can be acceptable for the Student Loans Company in its
letter dated 16 March 1999 to change its procedures for the collection of
course term dates at this late stage.
As I interpret it, the 16 March letter requires term dates to be returned by
1 April 1999 to SLC who will distribute these to LEAs on 9 April 1999.
I have raised this matter with SLC and one of their staff is evaluating
whether our spreadsheet will be acceptable.
