Jane,
At Swansea we are part of the federal University of Wales, and are thereby
governed by the practices laid down at University level. Having said that it
is probably also true that institutions within the University of Wales adopt
slightly different practices in regard to their degree ceremonies. Our
position is that students may opt:
1 to attend
2 to receive their degrees in absentia, in which case their names are listed
in the programmes but are NOT read out at the ceremony. We have a formula
(in Welsh) whereby the presenter (a Dean of Faculty) presents "those whose
names are listed in the printed programmes to receive their degreees in
their absence" They then are all admitted in one block by the
Vice-Chancellor.
3 To defer their admission to the following year.
Graduands who indicaste that they will be present but who do not turn up are
automatically admitted in absentia. Similarly students who do not opt for
any of the three options are again admitted in absentia. The degree
certificates are sent out after the event from the federal University
Registry.
I hope I have covered all your points.
Robert Barnes.
Director of Registry.
