Dear Colleagues,
The position at Swansea is that we have never abandoned the three term year.
What we have done is to superimpose a semester-like teaching pattern on this
structure. This has meant for example that we have moved the start of
session forward into September so that we can get eleven teaching weeks in
before Christmas. We did experiment for one session with a shorter Christmas
vacation but this was unpopular with the students and so we have returned to
the traditional four weeks. Our structure also means that students start
back the second term after Christmas with two weeks of assessment before the
second teaching block which begins towards the end of January. The second
teaching block also extends for eleven weeks across the Easter vacation
which is again four weeks. An additional revision week is added to this
followed by four weeks assessment. In this current session I am trying to
restrict the assessment period to three weeks in an attempt to process
everything within term-time.I am setting out below the dates for the present
session as an example.
Michaelmas Term 20 September - 10 December
Lent Term 10 January - 7 April
Summer Term 2 May - 14 June
Semester One 27 September - 21 January
Semester Two 24 January - 2 June
I hope all this is not too confusing.
