This message relates to the appointment of external examiners. I should be
grateful if colleagues could forward this to the member of staff in their
institution who is responsible for the central administration and/or
monitoring of the external examiner system. Thank you in advance.
Colleagues,
At a recent meeting of the Sub-committee for External Examiner Nominations
at the University of Brighton, it was noted that it was increasingly
difficult to identify suitable external examiners. A number of reasons
might be identified for this, including the heavy workload already
experienced by senior staff in their own institutions, and the ncertainty
surrounding future arrangements for external quality assurance.
It was agreed that younger staff often made excellent external examiners, as
they were enthusiastic about the role. However, these staff were often not
approached, as other institutions were not aware that they might be suitable
candidates.
The sub-committee therefore wondered whether it might be appropriate to
collate a list of those academic staff within the University who were
available to serve as external examiners, whether or not they already held,
or had previously held, external examinerships. This list might be made
available through the University website so that it could be accessed by
staff at other institutions when necessary. Senior staff in other
institutions could be contacted and notified of the existence of such a
list, and encouraged to collate the same information at their own
institutions, which would be a valuable resource throughout the sector.
As Secretary to the sub-committee, I was therefore asked to seek any
comments or observations from other institutions within the sector regarding
this tentative proposal. In particular, I would welcome any information
regarding institutions which are already carrying out similar work.
Please respond direct to me at: [log in to unmask]
and I shall collate any responses and circulate them to interested parties
(including updating on our plans if appropriate).
Thanks in anticipation
Jon
