We've had, for some years, a policy whereby staff,
full-time or part-time, can have Tuition Fees paid from
General Funds for one qualification.
Based originally on allowing research staff to gain PhDs,
it was extended as the years passed. Most recently, the
arrangement was extended to part-time staff, in proportion
to their "part-timeness": half-time = half the fees etc.
The Head of Department confirms that the course/programme
is relevant to the work of the department (though that has
become somewhat less rigid and more easily argued on the
grounds of personal development) and that any time off for
classes will be made up by the member of staff's working
additional time . Though not great in number, the
arrangement still exists - some sec/clerical staff have
gained undergraduate degrees by part-time study.
Though a 'harder' line may shortly be applied, at present
the arrangement is fairly straightforward. Staff have to
be on a formal appointment - ie the arrangement is not
extended to, say, postgrads undertaking tutoring or
demonstrating paid from departmental discretionary funds.
Staff employed on a contract basis *are* eligible - the
funding lasting for the duration of their contract.
