Sorry to join this exchange late. The Planning Office at the OU has the
following key tasks:
· to prepare the University's strategic and development plans and to
manage and co-ordinate the process of planning at unit level;
· to manage and develop the University's resource distribution
processes;
· to produce and disseminate statistical data and planning information
relevant to management and decision making within the University and to
prepare statistical returns to external bodies;
· to monitor and review performance at the institutional level through
the development and analysis of performance indicators and through other
review measures;
· to liaise, on behalf of the University, with the HE funding
councils, the Teacher Training Agency, the FE funding councils and the
Departments for Education and Employment in England, and its counterparts in
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland;
· to identify and secure opportunities for funding from the European
Union and from associated domestic funds;
· to monitor external developments relevant to education and training
and assess their implications for the OU;
· to provide secretariat support to the Strategic Planning and
Resources Committee and the Operational Planning and Budget Committee, and
to other internal planning and resource groups.
We have an establishment of 18 FTEs of whom 6 are administrators, 6 are
statisticians/information officers, and 6 are secretarial and clerical
staff. It is obviously large by comparison with other offices, but I
suspect this is a primarily a reflection of the scale of our operations (ie
a turnover of £260M and a student population of 165,000 distributed
throughout the UK and parts of Europe). LIke everyone else, I'd be
interested in the results of the survey and especially to see how the
functions that we undertake are organised elsewhere. Looks like a PhD
thesis in the making!
Martin.
