Hi all
just to clarify a couple of things from Rita's and Andy's e-mails.
Rita - I think it is very hard to find truly accessible venues. One
of the organisers said so. The Lighthouse as I said is still being
finished (even though it is open to the public), so they are
experiencing teething problems. The conference was well attended by
both disabled people and non-disabled people and most people seemed
to be coping with the facilities. I take on board Andy's point though
that with the DDA implications organisers of event s will have to
carefully consider their venues.
One item I did not mention in my first e-mail was the raised ridges
at the top of the stairs. Whilst they certainly provided tactile
information on the imminent stairs they were so pronounced that you
were thrown off balance as you walked over them. This was compounded
by the lack of different colouring of them - they had been cast in
the same dark colour as the rest of the hard floor finish. This was a
pity since obviously thought had gone into making sure that tactile
information was provided.
Andy - mentioned by suggestion about the BSI (British Standards
Institute). My suggestion was to find out off them when public
consultation on the new BS8300 will take place, and how?
Great to see the list coming to life.
