CALL FOR PAPERS AND BOOK REVIEWS

Widening Participation and Lifelong Learning: The Journal
of the Institute for Access Studies and The European Access
Network

BOOK REVIEWS

We are currently looking for reviewers to review the
following books for publication in the next issue of
Widening Participation and Lifelong Learning (due out at
the end of August). If anyone would be interested in
reviewing these books (and receive a free copy) or would
like to review books for forthcoming publication in the
Journal then please contact me on Tel: 01782 295782 or
e-mail: [log in to unmask] with your details: address,
research interests etc.

The books are:

Combating Social Exclusion in University Adult Education by
Julia Preece (ASHGATE PUBLISHERS) publication date
September 1999

Why's the beer always stronger up North? Studies of
Lifelong Learning in Europe Edited by Frank Coffield
(POLICY PRESS)

We are also calling for papers and shorter articles for the
innovative practice section of the Journal on access,
widening participation and lifelong learning.

SPECIAL ISSUE

A special issue will be published in the December issue on
Information and Guidance on education and career choice. As
the widening participation and lifelong learning movements
expand and gain momentum a key feature must be the
provision of information and guidance to potential
students. Research shows that potential students want more
information about the cost of education: fees, loans,
benefits and potential sources of financial support; the
economic returns to further and higher education, detailed
course information; specific job and career information and
much more besides. The decline of lifelong jobs and careers
and the need for a more flexible workforce increases the
need for education and careers guidance throughout people's
lives rather than only at the start of their working lives.

Please send articles (marking them for my attention) to:

Staffordshire University Press
Staffordshire University
Cadman Building
College Road
Stoke on Trent
ST4 2DE

Notes to contributors are available on request.

Best Wishes

Claire Mason
