I agree that urgent TFTs are very rarely required from Casualty. During the working day, results will normally be produced within a couple of hours anyway without any extra effort on our part.
The first question is, what difference will having the result urgently make to the present treatment of the patient ?
If a junior had requested the test, i would have asked for discussion with the consultant. When the consultant asked for it, i would automatically do it but have discussions with him later.
As others have said, TFTs can now be measured very easily on our automated analysers and it's not the problem it was a few years ago.
