I'll let Frank discuss the appropriateness of your article for the list
itself, because he is the administrator of the list. However, in terms of
general etiquette on the Internet, I see two problems with the attachment:
(1) Attached binary files can only be read by people using certain operating
systems. Microsoft would like us to believe that everybody is using their
products (Windows), but in fact many people on the Internet do use other
operating systems such as Unix, Macintosh, VMS, DOS, and many others. None
of these people would be able to read the attachment at all.
(2) The attached file was nearly a megabyte in size. Very large files like
this will do nasty things to some peoples' mail systems.
In general, the correct approach would have been to write a couple of
paragraphs explaining your situation and explain your topic, and offering to
send a copy of the thesis directly to anybody who was interested.
