Seminar on "Electronic Tolling And Congestion Charging"
Institution of Electrical Engineers, Savoy Place, London WC2R 0BL
25 March 1999.
Motorway tolling was an initiative of the UK Conservative Government,
aunched in the mid-1980's, but subsequently de-emphasised due to
political and social opposition to this 'poll tax on wheels'.
Trials of tolling technology have been held at the Transport Research
Laboratory, and previously in France, Germany and Singapore.
Trials are once more underway in Hong Kong. However, electronic
tolling systems are currently a world-wide billion dollar business,
with systems implemented in the USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore,
Italy and Norway - some of them recent, some of them long-standing.
The aim of the seminar is to examine operational and imminent
tolling systems worldwide, and their significance for the UK. Social
attitudes will also be covered, i.e., how to make road tolling
socially and politically acceptable in the UK.
