At this time of year it is good to re-iterate one or two things about
the operation of the UTSG list.
(1) Try NOT to send attachments of any kind to the list. This includes
executable files, documents and web pages. It is much better for all
concerned, both the sender and the receivers if you put your message
in the body of the email. If you need to direct people to a document or
a web page then give the URL in the message and invite poeple to visit
the site.
(2) Mailbase is Y2K compliant, other systems may not be. A message has
come from Mailbase suggesting that some users may wish to temporary
leave a list and re-join it in the New Year. There is NO requirement to
do so but if you do then the instruction to leave a list is:
leave <list name>
ie
leave ustg
When you want to re-join in the New Year the command is
join <list name> <Your first name> <Your second name>
ie
join utsg Freida Bloggs
All these commands should be sent to [log in to unmask]
Members of the utsg-inst list may also like to leave and re-join.
Alternatively you can use commands to suspend and then resume your
membership in the New Year.
(3) In the summer of 2000 the operation of "mailbase" will transfer to
another provider. The other provider will run different software
(LISTSERV). I shall keep you posted about the repercussions of this
move in the New Year.
Here's wishing you all a restfull and a peacefull New Year.
