One-Day Workshop on Traffic Control and Air Pollution:
The reduction of congestion and pollution through practical
modelling techniques
Budapest, Hungary, September 28, 1999
A prelude event to the 6th European Roundtable on Cleaner
Production

Registration: http://www.inem.org/traffic/ws-reg.rtf
General
Advanced IT is one of the technologies which holds the key to
solving the problems of road traffic. Already it is possible to use
computers to understand how complex traffic systems behave, and
how pollutants spread. Advanced computing is also being used to
control traffic systems, so that congestion and emissions can be
reduced. This workshop shows how powerful computing has been
applied in a cost effective way to tackling these problems.
Objectives
The objective of the workshop is to create an awareness in the use
of modelling tools to improve the quality of air in towns and cities.
The workshop takes place in the context of existing and planned
European Community legislation on air quality, specifically with
respect to pollutants resulting from traffic. The key message is that
advanced computer-based models are now widely an cost-
effectively available. They are able to run on ordinary desktop
computers. These models give a clear insight into the contribution
of traffic to levels of air-borne pollution and have a direct relevance
to those who have a responsibility for air quality. These tools can
be used in urban and regional planning and in the development of
effective strategies for the control of traffic flow and resultant
pollution. Their use has the potential to offer significant benefits to
the quality of life of European citizens.
Who should attend
The workshop is targeted at an audience from European and
national policy-making bodies, regional and local governments
with responsibility for traffic planning, environmental protection
groups and professional consultants involved in urban planning.
The emphasis will be on the use and practical application of a
mature technology for the benefit of the European citizen.
Provisional Programme
The workshop will start at 9 am on September 28 and will finish at
5 pm.
Chairman: Dr Zadok S Lempert, Executive Director, International
Network for Environmental Management

Keynote Speech from the European Commission setting the
objectives and status of legislation in this area

The organisers
This event is being organised by the Edinburgh Parallel Computing
Centre (EPCC) and the International Network for Environmental
Management (INEM).
Since 1990 the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC) has
promoted the effective exploitation of high performance computing
systems throughout industry, commerce and academia. It houses an
exceptional range of computers, with over 45 full-time staff
addressing real-world problems. Its industrial clients range from
large, multi-national organisations to small companies. For all such
clients, EPCC has applied advanced computing technology to give
effective and practical solutions. EPCC has pioneered many
innovations in the practical use of computing both creating
competitive advantage and contributing to a better environment.

The International Network for Environmental Management
(INEM), a non-profit membership organisation, is the world
federation of national business associations for environmental
management and cleaner production centres. The main task of
INEM is the promotion, development, dissemination and application
of principle and methods of environmental management, as well as
the creation and support of decentralised business associations for
environmental management world-wide. INEM strives to assist in
particular small and medium-sized enterprises; to improve the
quality of environmental management; and to transfer environmental
management know- how from business and industry to other sectors
of society.
