hi there
am glad at that despite the academic interegnum at least there's a
certain liveliness on this list. very pleased too to know that mr pain's
had his dinner. with regards to nationality - the dearest friend i have
in this world is a half hungarian half danish lady whose father was an
ex-jesuit priest but she was born in guy's hospital (within the sound of
bow bellls) which makes her technically a cockney.
how does one accomodate stereotypes of origin to that sort of thing? as
i implied to trevor joyce, i think british & irish culture are
inextricably linked - after all what was jonathan swift - dryden's '
cousin swift you will never be a poet' but an english-irishman?
i grew up in birmingham where 10 to 25 percent of the population were
either wholly or part irish. i once did a search on my ancestors via the
mormon database and got back to the birth in 1600 at halifax of a child
to a certain 'harmdridi birkenschawe'
so i give up on that.
cheers
david
