Superb readings last night by Allen Fisher and Tony Lopez. Intro to AF was
to be based on notes which were not referred to - it was improvised so no
record remains. But I said he was quite good.
Intro to TL - rough approx of what was said - is below
The magazine started again. Sub Voicive Poetry 1999 # 1 available for £1.50

Next SVP reading is Friday coming - Trevor Joyce, from Ireland - some hours
after the close of the 3rd colloquium at which Trevor Joyce Tony Lopez and 7
others will speak
L
Tony Lopez's publications include: Snapshots (1976), Abstract & Delicious
(1982), A Theory of Surplus Labour (1990), Stress Management (1994),
Negative Equity (1995) and False Memory (1996), which is an amazing and
wonderful set of writing. He was included in Conductors of Chaos.
And now I am going to rely on what others have written of him, briefly,
because they have said it well. Firstly, from Small Press Traffic's email
advert for his reading Friday, October 16, 7:30 p.m.:
"With False Memory and Negative Equity Tony Lopez's career... comes into
focus like a shift in the kaleidoscope or my binoculars. His writing makes a
person nervous, painfully conscious of the falsities that simplify and
abbreviate our lives. But... he provides plenty of pleasure along with the
pain." (I've lost my reference for that but I believe it was written by
Susan Wheeler ?)
To which Charles Alexander, who runs Chax Books, added:
"Just wanted to second the motion that people go to this. Just heard Tony
Lopez read in Tucson two nights ago, and he was marvellous... There's a
fireworks in the verbal artistry which is amazing and holds everything
together in a quite compelling manner."
And finally a quote from David Bromige: "This is the poetry I'd been waiting
for, a writing that is politicized throughout, but never denunciatory or
haranguing, that integrates its many elements into a muscular rippling
flow..."
Ladies and gentlemen, Tony Lopez.
