"on the eve"
the start of a poem
on the eve
Shit!
he is an understudy
for a saint,
crawling about on all fours
and always looking like crazy
limping about the toilets
looking for some t.s. eliots
or whatever they call cigarette
butts these days, and in john keats
poem, he is a holyman, and in this
a bum, someone roped in for effect,
he has no woman, and he has no religion,
and is no eremite
Shit!
on the lav walls he finds graffitti
that says in french
nous en reparlerons un autre jour,
noose en reparlyronce unn atrey jaw
and he repeats it once more
hang in there
keep the motor going, keep the motor going
he has a hole shaped like the americas on his
left knee and another that looks a bit like margaret
rutherford, a relic from the elstree studios,
and the blackheads are piling up there, looking for air,
and the blackheads are spreading nearly everywhere,
and they have now conquered ruritania
rule britannia
he is motion
ed to the bogs, for a lark
in the sound of the flushing, or a night
in gale in darkest pain
and maybe the old git is nuts
playing with his rosary beads like
that, and
hang in there
keep the motor going, keep the motor going
someone, has left the cold
tap running, like a river's snot
and he claps his hands together to keep
warm, like helen did edward, and got
cha, gotcha, he has caught his shadow
climbing the cistern
chapel
couldn't fool Thomas, couldn't fool him
doubt you could fool me either
and he seems too erudite for his own good
because his mind is too slow.
