|I did a reading at Borders recently where I experienced not only the
|expresso machine, but various bookshop announcements that somehow entered
|the microphone like a doppelganger. Not to mention the lack of ambient
|lighting, which made me feel pinned to the wall like a strange insect...
.
& as I think I remarked earlier last night we had the same mobile go off
twice
.
the effect of bill bissett in the room and Morris dancers outside was also
odd... I had no idea what the MDs were, which made it odder
.
I've been giving some thought to this during the evening. It makes me feel
like a primary teacher having to say don't pour beer on the books, don't
smoke, come back quickly, turn off your mobiles - all it needs is face the
front and stop talking; but that has seemed a possibility at times... I do
wonder why people come to readings sometimes; some have little concern for
the poet or the other audience - I am never forget a reading at East West
for those who remember it with Jeff Nuttall up the front booming his thing
and a bloke at the back reading a newspaper, not casually but held up in
front of him, serious reading, and every now and then he shook it out to
straighten it
