My mother listened to me and my sisters. I can look back and see she was
a very good mother. Of course, we've had our differences... But I've
always envied people with conventionally loving, or even tyrannically
possessive fathers! A father who values daughters! A father who thinks
their existence matters! A father who is not pathologically dishonest!
Sometimes I think of English literature as just like my father, only
better written. Naaaah, not really.
Still, one out of two is a lot better than many people score. And how I
am is basically my own fault.
