Hi Keston,
I think I like this accusation and formulation of 'metacircumstance'.
It suggests buying into detail for detail's sake and to the happenstance
of other attentions? Is there a binary for sale here I wonder?
'Metanarrative' in the blue corner (or is the red corner), 'metacircumstance'
the other whatever? I guess that can be spotted. Am I a proponent of it?
I'd hope to not quilty, although your shop floor or market haggler suggestions
don't seem entirely out of place. Come buy 'my' brutish meanings.
Well perhaps not the brightest ones alone, but ones that seem less
immediately of use or of desire either to myself (since I've just admitted
such is the possibility) or yourself (at which point you might begin to one
whether there's any point in carrying on in search of making a
transaction). But then something lingers in the moment of that letting in
of doubt, something passably humane, something quirky in the figure of
negotiation that stumbles and makes us laugh or just get plain angry or
rivets another exchange and in the process of that exchange, that
engagement (to plug the gap) there might be something worth pursuing a
little further and so . . . (((((
I'm just spinning it a little. There are times when the mobilisations of
such discourse can seem gratuitous granted? I'm struggling to try to give
an example, so how about a Keats manuscript in which he crosses out the
'and' and then rewrites 'and' above it? Now how about that as a
registration that opens to engagement with process and product of
registration? Without the making / marking of erasure and without the
reassertion in addition there is a less interesting site of engagement
unleashed or relased in the event of the writing. Whilst 'control' results
(i wouldn't really disagree with you, those are the details of
decision-making in writing that we make and are represented by?) the
negotiable aspects of how control is being effected are, to me, more
ebullient - more embracing of doubt, rendered humane and articulate.
I'm not trying to ascribe value to 'process-showing' as such here, that's
assinine. But rapid transactions between what is being 'sold' (pursuing
this Are You Being Served analogy for all it's worth) to the extent that
neither the seller nor the buyer (writer-reader - reader-writer) are any
longer able to fixate the commodity with confident object-consumption, but
instead effect a sufficiently toxic (now the shit's really pouring in)
exchange as to see that shit for what it might just be.
What, indeed who, pours into such 'gaps'?
I don't have an answer, that's for the writing and reading to explore
I will come back to this if you or anyone here can find a way to tease it
further (which I'd welcome). For now I'm just doing one more train and back
Thursday night, so until then and please don't let the hook rot
love and love
