Doug by the way I didn't mean to suggest that there's anything
particularly careerist about your work, which in some ways I find
exemplary of a style of engagement I admire very much. Just that, a
career is what we're all making in poetry, most of the time. That some
careers involve less access to corporate finance does in my view imply a
categorial difference, but doesn't make them less careery. I suppose I
want a neutral sense of careerist: the attitude of someone who works hard
and aspires to further their career, and who conceives of this commitment
as central to their intentions.
