Dear all--
Thought I'd toss in a welcome for the new Equipage chapbooks, four of which
just popped through the mailslot this week. Was immediately struck by Ian
Patterson's _Much More Pronounced_--some of his best work, I think. (I
fancy I detect the results of close attention to Raworth's work in this
book; the cover-collage cements the possibility.) Two poems, one short &
one very long--I'll quote a bit from the latter (the title-poem):
Don't we really want
the cranks of nine
black cap of piquant set
in little ivory sombrero
at my wit's end?
Here we have radiant doll
in an old bag of ready catch
mellow bead wrist to pull
with wired devotion
as her screen image
I didn't like to look
out of it, slogan treated as
it is wonderful to hear
all tricked up and vapid
and acclaimed our censors said
Or didn't we? Slice trivial
squeaks of nations, reel times
buzz off and plain
holding a weapon in each
other art and rock with mirth
Really bottled England of twin
prophets by some ironic past
served a slim ordeal
as a sort of temple so I say
yes to her rag arms of refuge
....
The other Equipages to arrive: John Wilkinson's _Reverses_ (only given it
the quickest attention so far, but has already caught the ear); Jennifer
Moxley's _Wrong Life_ (good book, which Pete Smith's already talked about
on this list); and John Kinsella's _The Benefaction_ (a long poem, I'm
afraid not to my taste). -- The curious may acquire these books (& much
else) from Peter Riley Books (<[log in to unmask]>).
All best. --N
