Well, one shouldn't mistake levels of quality with value. They are quite
different things and the latter is pointless in a discussion of this kind.
But I've not quite dragged myself out of the primordial slime here,
Darwinism aside, although there is evolution in poetry isn't there . . . I
thought all that make it new stuff was for real?
I suppose I have read the rules about what we are allowed to raise on this
list and I hadn't quite recollected that canons were out of bounds too. You
are quite right about my posturing, but the regressive nature of openness
does take some getting used to. If I'm Alf you must be Oswald in this
context. Canons aren't fixed nor are they terribly stable, but I suspect
that we're not talking about canons so much as who maintains them and who is
in them. Which is of course a different matter.
Still it's good to stir the juice now and again isn't it. This pluralist
openness lark is about as much fun as a Methodist trip to the brewery.
