- without commenting on the specific incidents which gave rise to this
statement, I'd like to add a quick amen to it - canons _are_ being
constructed, wittingly and unwittingly, and they don't help. At one
extreme annecdotal edge, one "innocent bystander" was looking through a
copy of "Other" in my presence recently and said "Sooo - which one of
these would you like to see as Poet Laureate?" Aaargh!
It ought to be apparent that a culture which can celebrate _range_ thus
has no need to construct or perpetuate hierarchies.
Few bystanders are truly innocent, but this one was about as close as you
get.
