I came across this too: as far as I can recall the distinction is thought
to be only recent (post-ww2, though how they'd know that defeats me), and
is not discernable to the naked (human) eye. The border line would be, of
course, around Todmorden. Unlike many other elements of the local
ecosystems, the two tribes of bat don't cross the line to mate. One of
them has a lower squeak than the other, but I'm damned if I can recall
which...
I'm sure there are contemporary socio-political analogies to be drawn from
this, but I'm not about to do this. Nope, not me, no sir...
Congratulations to Simon Armitage on his appointment as Poet In Residence
in the Dome. I for one think this is an excellent choice.
