I don't think I was being supercilious -- as I was certainly not indifferent
As to Michael's points, they are valid --the BBC World service is an
excellent service -but let's think of the case from here in Japan --the
number of listeners for such a programme if it was broadcast would be very
small --compared to that of the domestic UK audience who listen to Radio 3
I was not not being serious --when I mentioned the farmers and foot & mouth
disease -- is mirth allowed on this list? Local radio from my experience
again provides an excellent service -- but there is often a serious
mismatching -- and experiences like I mentioned do occur. It does help if
you consider the market --perhaps this lack of commercial thinking is the
reason why so few poetry books are sold and that the audience/readership is
around the same as those who are collect beer mats. But maybe I am wrong?
What is the total readership? Someone on the list could perhaps enlighten
us.
