- and all we "experienced" writers - of both sexes, I suspect - feed this:
a regular piece of advice we give a new writer is: identify a press/mag
which you feel happy with, and send there. Don't send blind. This derives
largely from the fact that anyone who's run a small press or magazine for
a week knows that most of the unsoliciteds they get are from people who
simply haven't checked to see what the press publishes. The possibility
exists that to look at a (perhaps largely male) list of authors from press
x or y may directly engender those "half-formed suspicions" against
sending to them, even when asked, no?
Remember: you can subcribe to this list in DIGEST form and read the day's
messages in one long sequence, with all the threads mixing. A bit like
walking into a pub around closing time...
Have good weekends
