Tony Baker: Binding Affinities. Oasis Books ISBN 1 900996 06 5. £2.50
Available from: Oasis Books, 12 Stevenage Rd, London SW6 6ES - or via
Peter Riley.
One poem, in three sections, from the french landscape and language
base which Baker is now familiar with, enough to make these. Into that
base he binds quotes from Ives, sea shanties, and to hold the piece
together, snips from the spiritual Deep River. Tony Baker learned
lotsa stuff about lyricism, rhythm and scoring from the likes of Paul
Blackburn and Steve Jonas, and has spent many years translating these
into a North-Lunnun-Derbyshire-meets-Loire accent which is all his
own. The last words are from Louis Armstrong:
"All music's folk music. Leastways, I ain't never heard a hoss make
it"
How about some more of the bon mots of L.A.?
