Peter et al --
Prynne made the short list in a new promotion The New Yorker is running, in
which five books were chosen in fiction, non-fiction and poetry to be voted
upon by the magazine's readership (and anyone with access to a phone or
on-line service). The NYer poetry editor Alice Quinn, Mark Strand and I
voted on 1999 books -- the tallying was done numerically, and Prynne's
POEMS, I'm delighted to say, made the list of five. I don't think it would
be news to say that the magazine's editorial choices are in part based upon
feedback from readership; a strong feedback re Prynne may indeed have an
impact beyond the confines of this promotion.
There is a sizable cash award (although I don't recall offhand how much)
for the winner.
