Hi all
An interesting thread but one which has lost sight of the fact that genes
only indicate predisposition. It is unlikely that a single gene would be to
blame for poetry, rather it is a combination of circumstances and
opportunity. The idea that someone should have an inherited talent is an
old one , but one which probably has more to do with the background and
encouragement (or otherwise) received.
Predisposition and ability are not the same as achievement and many who
achieve beyond what others think they are capable of, are doing so through
other factors and sometimes inspite of a genetic inheritance. I seem to
remember this argument in relation to the last great scientific touchstone
of ability, the IQ. The only people who find that of interest today are
eager parents and those with an inflated view of their own worth.
