The subject of reviews was raised recently
so it might be timely for me to inform
list members that small press book reviews
are published regularly on NHI Review Online.
http://www.nhi.clara.net/online.htm
Editors and publishers should take a look
at the notes at
http://www.nhi.clara.net/revdoc.htm
We are also keen to recruit new reviewers
who should first read the notes at
http://www.nhi.clara.net/writers.htm
Our policy means that we don't publish
unsolicited reviews, although I am quite happy
for reviews published on the website
to be posted elsewhere and discussed.
I should stress that potential reviewers
need to have a certain commitment
as those who keep books for several
months before deciding they cannot
review the material sent to them do
a big dis-service to
the publishers who send out review copies.
The magazine Terrible Work reviewing the
last printed edition of NHI Review said
"Books are sent out blind to a pool of
reviewers (some of them are floating corpses)"
This isn't true. I try to send books to reviewers
who will appreciate the type of book/mag sent
but, obviously, I don't always get it right.
The same review goes on to say
"When is there going to appear in Britain
a serious review mag with serious attitude?"
The trouble is that even the members of this
list disagree as to who they take seriously,
so no review is likely to please everyone.
Tim Allen, the editor of Terrible Work
is not online, although a notice in the
current issue suggests he will be soon.
