Hello Nate,
Glad to be in contact via more reliable means than those
transatlantic carrier pigeons
which keep going astray. Re. La Quinta: the poems were based on a series
of etchings done around the same time as the 'las pinturas negras'. The
series goes under several different names 'Los Proverbios'
Los Disparates (Follies) & Los Suenos (Dreams).
Apart from the irresistibly bizarre and brooding nature of these
etchings I was taken by comments in the introduction to the collection ( I
have the Dover Edition) which talks at length about the fact that none of
the etching were titled by Goya (apart from a couple of 'maybes' ). Each
etching has been title by art historians. I found the titles very
intrusive. At best they are unimaginative at worse coercive and
restrictive. So in one sense the poems were a way overriding the
dictatorship of titling
They are not meant to be interpretative or finite, I don't think that's
possible given the subject matter but they do have a paralel and connected
existence evoked by those truly amazing etchings.
Hope there is something in this that you can use.
Best wishes,
Geraldine
