As we've seen, it's very often difficult to discuss new poetry,
because one has to feel ones way towards expression. Dogmatism simply
won't enable us to respond adequately. However, with charity, our
tentative fumblings may sometimes bring us - as individuals, if not
collectively - towards a better understanding of (a) the work in
question (like it or loathe it) and (b) the nature of our own
responses - assuming these aren't so atrophied with the years as to be
incapable of development. I think that fallible, fumbling-towards
process is one of the good points of a _discussion_ list, at its best,
and I've welcomed it when people have tried to _say why_ they respond
as they do, without needing to agree with them all. I want to stress
that expression, a _discussion_ list, rather than, for instance, an
_assertion_ list, where it's ok just to assert things, which I'd be
sorry if this list became.
