At a tangent to the verse-poetry debate, I was surprised by Douglas
Clark's view that it was a mistake on Hill's part to 'look outside at
the agony of the century rather than searching for it deep in one's
own soul'. I feel that, whatever Hill's faults, one of his great
strengths is that he realizes the dangers of looking in one's own
soul - in particular the danger of appropriating the various and
unimaginable sufferings of others by making them part of one's own
angst.
